International Relations of Universitas Diponegoro (IRUD)
Summer Course 2025
IRUD Summer Course is an annual short course by Universitas Diponegoro’s International Relations Department, featuring online lectures and activities. It explores transnational crime and deviance in the context of global changes, fostering academic discussion with experts and participants worldwide to address emerging, diverse, and marginalized issues.
Program Overview
IRUD Summer Course is a short course held by the Department of International Relations, Faculty of Social and Political Science, Universitas Diponegoro, Semarang, Indonesia. IRUD Summer Course takes the form of a series of online lectures and activities, attended by both international and domestic participants. This program is held annually and concentrates on current issues in international relations, with an emphasis on discussions by academicians and professionals in order to provide insights for both students and practitioners.
The world has recently undergone a series of major changes, among them the election of various populist leaders, the return of protectionist regimes, the increasing pace and severity of climate change, shifts in global migration, and the development of technologies such as artificial intelligence. These developments have had a marked effect on crime and deviance, including the rise of climate justice initiatives, the proliferation of technology-assisted organized crimes as pig butchering scams and romance scams, along with the intensification of other forms of deviance hitherto underexplored. Therefore, this summer course attempts to foster a deeper understanding of the above issues and contribute towards our understanding of them.
Hence this year, with the overarching theme of “Frontiers in Responses to Transnational Crime”, IRUD Summer Course aims to be a platform for academic discussion on pertinent issues related to transnational crime and deviance, and responses towards the same. The topic of ‘crime’, ‘deviance’ is defined widely, and this event welcomes lesser-explored issues from the perspective of the marginalized and neglected: including but not limited to environmental degradation as crime, climate justice, issues in international migration, agrarian conflict, along with more traditional concerns as issues in law, issues in peace, cybercrime, and security (defined widely to include human security). We hope to attract panel discussants and experts from diverse fields, and aims to facilitate the exchange of cutting-edge perspectives on the issues above.

Program Objectives
This program aims to enhance knowledge of contemporary transnational crime, offer new perspectives on related issues, and foster collaboration among national and international participants, students, and researchers, strengthening networks within the global academic community.
