Semarang (22/03), Department of International Relations, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Universitas Diponegoro (FISIP UNDIP) held a seminar entitled “Reviewing Water from the Perspective of Gender and Development” in commemoration of World Water Day 2024. The seminar was held in the Theater Room, FISIP UNDIP, and was opened by Dr. Teguh Yuwono, M.Pol.Admin as the Dean of FISIP UNDIP. Present as speakers were Dr. Henny Rosalinda, a lecturer from International Relations, Universitas Brawijaya, and Anjani Tri Fatharini, S.IP, M.A, a lecturer from International Relations, FISIP UNDIP. Students attended the event, mothers from Mardi Utomo Social Service Center, WALHI, and academics and practitioners related to water issues.
In this hybrid activity, Dr. Henny mentioned how water issues intersect with gender issues, especially in traditional or patriarchal societies. In traditional societies, women are given responsibilities in household affairs such as washing, and cooking, which are also very dependent on water. On the other hand, the lack of infrastructure in clean water distribution makes the burden on women even heavier in terms of access to clean water, as is the case in NTT. Many people think that the problems of water and sanitation are different and are far from each other, even though water and sanitation are intersecting problems.
After Dr. Henny finished her presentation, Anjani Tri Fatharini, S.IP, M.A., continued her presentation on water issues and their intersection with the large water consumption in the textile industry. In her presentation, Anjani raised the experience of civil society, in this case, the fostered group from Mardi Utomo Social Service Center, in terms of processing used textile products into economically valuable products. In her advocacy efforts with civil society, Anjani and several other lecturers from the Department of International Relations, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Universitas Diponegoro, worked together with the Mardi Utomo Semarang Social Service Center to utilize the unused clothes to be transformed into more useful items as a form of implementing a circular economy in line with SDGs 12 and 13.
This seminar was closed by taking documentation in the form of photos and videos with all participants who attended both directly and online. After the photo session, the participants who came received souvenirs in the form of bags made by the mothers of Mardi Utomo Social Service Center.
